The Breed Council website and the Kennel Club websites both have information on stewarding. This page regards some of my thoughts on the stewarding process in general and for Chows more specifically.
Firstly I would recommend an individual being an exhibitor before considering stewarding. Through exhibiting you will become accustomed to the ring procedure, you should also be watching how this process comes together, sit watch and take in this procedure, what does the judge and the steward do? The steward is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the show ring and correct conduct. This includes knowledge of the facilities- where is the mop etc, if a dog does foul in the ring the steward can assist by getting the mop etc.; personally that is as far as I go, I will get the mop etc. and offer to hold the dog for the owner while they clear up, then remove the mop after.
Another key aspect is keeping track of the winners of each class, to call back any unbeaten winners to challenge. I use the sheet below to assist with this process.
| Class | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Res | VHC | Note- AOC | Not other challenges | Note other challenges |
From there I can place dogs into a second table for the challenges

Do the same with the girls.
